Visit Samburu Intrepids Camp
Samburu Intrepids is situated on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River in the arid heart of Samburu National Reserve. Samburu Intrepids looks out over riverbanks where herds of elephant, buffalo and zebra come daily to drink – together with the rarer ‘northern species’ of reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx and long-necked gerenuk antelope.
Samburu Intrepids is renowned as a pioneer of luxury camping in one of the world’s last truly great wilderness areas and guests can view this dramatic wilderness from many fascinating perspectives. The tented luxury camp is a delight to be in – deliciously cooled by the river breeze and the forest. The camp sits on raised decks overlooking the brown river where often elephants are seen and crocodiles come out to lounge by the river’s banks.
Accommodation
Samburu Intrepids offers 28 modern and newly refurbished tents with a private view over the wildlife-rich banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River. Each tent sits on a raised deck overlooking the brown river where the elephants sometimes make an appearance or the crocodiles come out to lounge by the river’s banks.
The tents are spacious, measuring 26 sq. meters have either a 150cmx190cm queen size bed or two twin beds of 90cmX190cm. The roofing is made of palm-thatched roof and the tents also have netted screens on the sides to allow for the river breeze to keep them cool and offer stunning views of the Samburu landscape. The tents boasts of soft beds; handsome mahogany closets and a writing desk; as well as an en-suite bathroom with a steaming hot shower; twin washbasins; a flush toilet; and sockets for shavers and battery charging. The main dining room opens onto an outdoor dining terrace where buffet breakfasts, lunches and dinners are served overlooking the river. (Meals can also be enjoyed on your private verandah or at one of the specially selected ‘bush sites’ close to the camp.) Buffet lunches and candlelight dinners are served on an elevated deck amidst the high shade trees.
Facilities include: dining areas overlooking the river, lounge and bar, freeform ‘oasis’ swimming pool and sunbathing garden, small conference room with television/VCR facilities, boutique with souvenirs and safari essentials, telephone, e-mail, fax and postal services and professional health and beauty treatments.
Activities
As well as game drives to view the surrounding wilderness, the camp also offers escorted nature walks, memorable bush breakfasts and starlit dinners, sundowners, tours of Samburu villages and lectures and slide shows on culture and wildlife.
As a member of the Heritage Hotels group of properties, Samburu Intrepids features the renowned Adventurers’ Club for the kids. For children aged under 12 years The Adventurers’ Club includes activities such as:
- Build your own mini Maasai homestead
- Have a close brush with a toothbrush tree
- Learn to make a fire with a pair of sticks
- Catch and study the brightest butterflies
- Plant a tree and help bring back the rains
- Cast big cat tracks from the real thing
- Make friends quiver with your own bow
- Learn how to identify birds of all feathers
- Stalk victory in the bush treasure hunts
- Star gazing
And for older children (aged 12-17 years) there is:
- Bush orienteering
- First aid
- Snake and bird identification
- Tree identification
- Mammal behaviour studies
- Guided bush walks
Accommodation
Elephant Bedroom Luxury Tented Camp, have recently completed the commissioning of two new spacious, luxury suites, bringing the total number of guest tents to fourteen. In addition to these two, Guests at Elephant Bedroom Camp are accommodated within another 12 spacious safari tents – each is nicely furnished in a rustic African style while offering every comfort expected of a luxury safari camp.
The guest tents are each set on a raised wooden deck with a small plunge pool – ideal for cooling down after a morning on safari. Each tent has either one king-size double bed or twin queen-size beds as well as a sofa, coffee table, dressing table and attractive soft furnishings. All tents have electricity and en suite facilities (showers / double basins with hot and cold running water and w.c).
In addition, the 02 new suites, named Lapa and Lakira (meaning Moon and Star in the Maa language), have a bathtub, an external shower and a larger deck area which has a double sunbed and a larger plunge pool. The new suites are fitted out with safes and two-way radios to ease communication with the camp staff.
Activities & Facilities
The food and service at Elephant Bedroom Camp are of a high standard. A generous breakfast and lunch (three courses) are served outside when possible. The four course evening meal is either taken by candle-light in the open-front dining area or al fresco.
Activities at Elephant Bedroom Camp are geared around introducing guests to the flora and fauna of Samburu National Reserve. Guests have plenty of opportunity to see a wide variety of Kenya’s wildlife – the lesser-known species as well as the Big Five – on the high quality game drives. These are taken in open sided 4×4 safari vehicles for the best possible game-viewing experience.
The safari camp has a resident naturalist who imparts a wealth of knowledge. The educational guided bush walks take guests as close as possible to the indigenous plants and animals to learn how the local people use the surroundings in their everyday routine. The camp also has regular visits to a local village where guests can learn more about Samburu culture and witness a little of Samburu life.
The early morning game drive may end with an unforgettable breakfast in the bush, surrounded by the stunning landscape and distant rolling hills. In the evening the drive will take in a scenic point in order to stop for sundowners to observe the sun setting over the African plains.
Elephant Bedroom Camp has many perfect places to unwind after a busy day on safari. There is an elegant open-front lounge tent with comfortable armchairs and sofas and a beautiful view of the river. There are hammocks slung between the trees on the riverbank and a riverside seating area around a campfire – an ideal spot for sharing the day’s adventures over a drink when the sun has gone down.
