Jambo, I’m Tommy Mees, most people call me Tom.
My connection with Africa began through years of travelling across the continent.
I later spent more than twelve years managing safari camps and lodges while supporting conservation initiatives including beekeeping and tree-planting projects.
Having travelled extensively throughout Eastern and Southern Africa, I developed a deep appreciation for authentic wilderness experiences and the conservation-focused approach of the Porini Camps.
I am originally from Belgium and now based in Spain, though my heart has always remained in Africa.

For most destinations in Africa, a valid full driver’s licence from your home country is sufficient. An International Driving Permit may be recommended in some regions. Your safari specialist will advise on specific requirements based on your itinerary.
Is a self-drive safari suitable for first-time safari travellers?
Yes. Self-drive safaris can be suitable for first-time safari travellers, provided that you are comfortable with driving in rural conditions, follow guidance from your specialist, and use detailed itinerary plans that include highlights and recommended stops.
What kind of vehicle is recommended for a self-drive safari?
4x4 vehicles or sturdy SUVs with high ground clearance are recommended for self-drive safaris, particularly in remote or wildlife areas.Â

In some private Conservancies self drive is not allowed due to the vehicle number restrictions, it is also beneficial to have a local Driver Guide as they will have experience of the land and wildlife.

A self-drive safari route is typically planned with the help of a specialist who recommends camps, conservancies, national parks and travel legs that make sense geographically and seasonally. Your itinerary will also include directions, estimated travel times, booking details and suggested activities.
