Our Porini family safari tours in Kenya are in private conservancies surrounded by thousands of acres of protected wilderness leased directly from local Maasai communities. With only one tent per 700 acres and one tourist vehicle per 1,400 acres permitted, our small, eco Porini Camps guarantee a more intimate, eco-friendly wildlife experience.

That means no queues of vehicles, no noise, no rushed sightings. When a lion emerges from the grass or a cheetah starts to hunt, it’s just you, your family, your dedicated guides and the moment. FAQs Family safari holidays in Kenya.

How many tents are there in each Porini Camp? Will our family have privacy?

Every Porini Camp is intentionally small, typically 6 to 10 guest tents. This ensures privacy, quiet, and a personalised experience far removed from large lodges.

The Family Tents are comprised of two Twin / Double tents connected together by an additional private lounge area.

These are ideal for families with children, extended families or groups of adults travelling together.

How comfortable are the tents?

Very.

Porini tents are spacious and fully en-suite with flush toilets, hot showers, comfortable beds, and solar-powered lighting/charging points. They feel like a boutique room in the middle of the wilderness,  not ‘camping’ in the traditional sense.

Each standard Tent has one Double & one twin bed, and can comfortably fit 3 people. If your group is larger than 3 we then recommend one of our Family Tents.

What age is a Porini Safari suitable for?

Porini Camps welcome children aged 8 years and over. This age policy is in place because the camps are unfenced and located in wildlife areas, where safety and awareness are essential at all times.

Safari activities also require guests to be quiet, patient, and attentive while observing wildlife, sometimes for extended periods. These conditions are generally not suitable for younger children. By welcoming children from 8 years and above, Porini Camps ensure a safer environment and a more rewarding safari experience for all guests, while respecting the wildlife and natural surroundings.

Is it safe to stay in an unfenced tented camp with children?

Yes. Your safety is our top priority. The camps are unfenced but carefully managed by experienced Maasai staff who monitor the camp day and night. Our guides accompany guests to and from their tents after dark, providing maximum reassurance and safety for your children and elderly relatives.

What kind of safari experiences can we expect on a Porini Family Safari?

Guests can enjoy game drives, walking safaris, scenic picnics, visit to Maasai Village, and wildlife encounters in unspoiled wilderness.

How is the food, and do you cater for picky eaters or special diets?

Our Porini Camps are fully able to cater for family members who are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free. We can provide for other dietary needs with advance notice including simple meals for young children.

Is there Wi-Fi or phone signal if we need to stay connected?

There is phone signal in most camps and limited Wi-Fi in some communal areas. And while many guests will enjoy the chance to disconnect, there is still enough connectivity to stay in touch if needed.

Our Camps are in constant contact with our head office in Nairobi, so in case of any emergency you are always reachable.

What wildlife will I see at each camp? Can I see the Big Five?

You’ll see exceptional wildlife at every Porini Camp, but the full Big Five across the camps combined.  Your itinerary can be designed however you want it to maximise specific wildlife interests.

What’s included in the stay?

Almost everything your family will need!

Our Porini family safari packages in Kenya are all-inclusive. At a glance, here are some of the key things we offer:

  • Game drives (with dedicated 4x4 vehicles, not crowded vans).
  • Night drives (a magical experience for older children and teens).
  • Guided walks (safe, educational lessons from our Maasai guides).
  • All meals and drinks.
  • Conservancy fees (no surprise costs).
  • Airstrip transfers (seamless transfer from plane to camp).
  • Laundry in most camps.

We also meet you on arrival into Kenya and arrange all the internal flights and hotel nights in Nairobi on your behalf, reducing your travel planning stress.

What are the rules in the conservancies? Can we go off-road or do night drives?

Yes. Conservancies allow activities that national parks do not, including:

  • Off-road driving for closer, more rewarding sightings that keep children excited.
  • Night drives using red-filtered spotlights to spot nocturnal animals.
  • Guided bush walks with Maasai trackers, offering safe, educational lessons about tracks and smaller creatures for the whole family.
hat is a typical day like at a Porini Camp?

A typical day includes:

  • An exciting early morning game drive.
  • A special bush breakfast.
  • Relaxation at camp. perfect for family downtime, swimming, relaxing or quiet play.
  • Afternoon or evening drive.
  • Sundowners overlooking the plains (a lovely spot for family photos).
  • Night drive back to camp.
  • Enjoy time under the stars around the camp fire before dinner.

No two days are the same, as the wildlife dictates the rhythm.

How long is a typical family safari, and is it easy to add a beach stay?

We recommend a safari duration of 7 to 10 nights to give your family enough time to settle in, experience two or three conservancies without rushing, and minimise travel fatigue for both children and elderly relatives.

Yes, it is very easy to add a Kenyan beach resort stay afterwards. This is a perfect, relaxing transition after the early mornings and excitement of the bush, allowing everyone to decompress and enjoy a few days of effortless relaxation before returning home.

We can arrange internal flights and hotel nights on your behalf.
