Amboseli National Park & Selenkay Conservancy

Amboseli National Park, lying at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, is one of Kenya’s most photographed and celebrated wildlife areas. Its vast open plains are framed by the snow-dusted summit of Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain, creating a dramatic backdrop for wildlife viewing. This is a landscape where large herds of elephants roam freely, predators prowl, and over 400 bird species thrive in its varied habitats of grassland, swamp, and seasonal lake bed. Kilimanjaro is most often revealed in its full glory at dawn or dusk, when the clouds lift to uncover the iconic peak.

While Amboseli attracts many visitors, conservation efforts are working to protect its delicate environment. Initiatives to improve roads and strictly control off-road driving are helping to restore areas that have suffered from heavy tourism in the past.

Ten miles north of the park lies the Selenkay Conservancy, a pristine 12,500-acre area within the Maasai-owned Eselenkei Group Ranch. Established by Gamewatchers Safaris in partnership with the local community, Selenkay shares the same ecosystem as Amboseli but limits visitor numbers to preserve its wilderness character. The conservancy offers a more exclusive experience, with just one camp—Porini Amboseli Camp.

Here, the wildlife moves naturally without the pressure of constant vehicle traffic. Visitors benefit from the guidance of Maasai rangers and trackers who share deep knowledge of the land and its species. Elephants have returned after decades of absence, and sightings of lions, cheetahs, leopards, giraffes, gazelles, and lesser-known species such as bat-eared foxes and gerenuks are common.

Whether you choose the iconic views and open spaces of Amboseli National Park or the intimate, community-led experience of Selenkay Conservancy, both offer unforgettable encounters with Kenya’s wildlife and landscapes.
