Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe Forest is a high-altitude rainforest located on the Albertine Rift in the South-East of Rwanda. It is a unique and ancient region pre-dating the last Ice Age. Though much of Africa’s mountain rainforest has disappeared, Nyungwe’s 950 square kilometres of timeless landscape has remained untouched and it is now protected as the largest montane forest area in East or Central Africa.

With beautiful views and waterfalls that can be accessed via its well maintained forest trails, Nyungwe has a unique and diverse vegetation with over 200 species of tree and shrub and many unusual flowering plants including over 100 varieties of orchid.

Many visitors are attracted to Nyungwe by its 13 species of primates including chimpanzees (humankind’s closest living relative), the ruwenzori colobus monkey, L’Hoest’s monkey and golden monkey. The Forest is one of the World’s most important ornithological sites with 300 species of birds, some of which are highly endangered and remain only within this area. The ruwenzori turaco, Ross’s turaco, blue-headed and regal sunbirds, hornbills and hoopoes can all be seen.
