More Information

Escape from the tourist trail at  the award-winning, eco-friendly Porini Lion Camp, offering a unique opportunity to take guided walks with Maasai Warriors and experience day and night safari game drives within the Olare Motorogi Conservancy – a pristine and exclusive 33000-acre wilderness set aside for wildlife conservation and low-impact tourism.

Porini Lion Camp is located in unique and stunning setting on the banks of the seasonal Ntiakatiak River within the Olare Motorogi Conservancy .

This large area borders the Maasai Mara National Reserve and is home to an abundance of animals including the Mara’s renowned Big Cats. There is unsurpassed game-viewing within the conservancy due to its unspoiled natural state and the Porini Lion Camp – with just nine tents and two family units – ensures guests have a genuine “away from it all” experience deep in the African bush.

The family units at Porini Lion Camp are made of high quality canvas, spacious, measuring 144 square metres.  Each unit consists of two rooms with a lounge in between. Each of the two rooms has a king size bed and a single bed, The high-quality, spacious tents are tastefully furnished and have solar-powered lighting, ensuite facilities (with hot shower and flush toilet) and private verandas. The units are ideal for families or group of friends traveling together and are at the same price per person as our other tents. The camp welcomes children aged 8 years and over (see Prices Information for more details).

Limited laundry is available at no charge. Laundry is done by hand and dried outdoors, therefore turnaround time is dependent on the weather. Out of respect to local culture and customs, we do not wash underwear. Washing powder is provided in all of our guest rooms should guests wish to wash their own.

If you are looking for an African safari package, the Porini Lion Camp accommodation is fully inclusive of all meals, drinks (beer, wine, sodas, vodka, gin & tonics and mineral water) as well as all activities (including day and night game drives, escorted walks and sundowners). Game safari drives (shared) are in specially-designed off-road (4×4) safari vehicles with expert / qualified safari guides to ensure the best possible game-viewing. Guests particularly enjoy the safari drives within the Conservancy where they experience the African wilderness without being surrounded by other tourist vehicles.

Porini Lion Camp is an ideal base from which to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration, and there is also the opportunity to enjoy a Hot Air Balloon Safari.

For guests staying at Porini Lion Camp, we can arrange to book return flights from Nairobi to the nearby Olare Motorogi airstrip using the daily scheduled services of Safarilink, one of Kenya’s leading safari airlines, at the applicable air fares.

Our Porini Camps in the Mara are adjacent to the reserve in exceptionally rich wildlife areas where tourism density is controlled and deliberately kept very low (1 guest tent to 700 acres) and as such there is no need to visit the Mara National Reserve to view lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, buffalo, giraffe, hippo etc. Stays in our camps in the conservancies also include extra activities like night game drives, guided bush walks, bush meals and sundowners. However, should guests wish to include a visit to the reserve this can be pre-booked with the additional park entry charge applicable (contact us for prices). As the park entry tickets for the reserve must be booked and paid for in advance, this option needs to be confirmed at time of booking.

Amazing Safari Experience

An outstanding safari camp in the Mara with lovely staff that really spoil the guests. Our Kenyan adventure started at PLC and we were absolutely elated with the camp and the overall experience. The tents are that in name alone. They are spacious, with large comfortable beds and an en-suite bathroom with the oft-mentioned bucket showers. Also, the one positive surprise was the power outlet in the room itself. We loved the “room”. The other positives were the lovely media tent which had WiFi connectivity…also another positive in the middle of nowhere. Meals were generally very good as well. The points that keep me from giving the camp a 5* rating are the lack of a proper lounge area, and a plus would be if that had a nice view…that would be a good addition to the camp. Secondly, one person in the group was vegetarian and the meal pickings were slim for them (vs the meat eaters did have a feast!!), so that can be improved. And the last point is niggling but a stand fan in the tent would be an absolute luxury during the hot afternoons, especially given the existing power socket. Our guide team led by Bill was outstanding and the sightings they brought us to were numerous and of high quality. As many have mentioned, the camp is in a private conservancy so the number of vehicles is much lesser and as a result the quality of animal interactions is great. Overall, Fred and team manage the place wonderfully. The staff are friendly, efficient and very hospitable. Housekeeping staff run a tight ship and make sure all is clean and sparkling in the tents. I could not be much happier, other than the few points mentioned that could improve the overall experience. I would love to return here at some point.

I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve stayed here, so surely, that’s proof in itself! As with all Porini camps, the pavilion tents are large and very comfortable, with a double and single bed, flushing toilet, running water in the basin and a bucket shower which everyone should experience when in Africa. Excellently managed by Frederick and his team, I was given a warm welcome and treated to wonderful hospitality. The guides and spotters are, as in all Porini camps, experts, and only want to share their knowledge with guests. Being located in a conservancy, there are far fewer vehicles than in the Maasai Mara Reserve. Breakfast in the bush on early morning game drives is a must, and lunch too, particularly when it’s located over a river housing hippos. Being in a conservancy also means that game drives at night can be taken. Porini camps are, in my opinion, an authentic way to experience wildlife, eco friendliness, conservation and support to local communities.

We went for the migration crossing and it was as spectacular as we thought. The company food accommodation was brilliant. Couldn’t ask for more.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Porini lion camp in early August as part of a trip in which we visited the Olare Motoragi conservancy and then the Mara National park. Being in the conservancy we had the most amazing animal experiences including a jaw dropping night drive. Our guide was so knowledgeable and committed to giving us the best time with sightings, information and snacks! The food was delicious - options are limited because it's a small camp but thoughtfully chosen and well cooked. We are omnivores but also noted that the chefs were very accommodating of dietary needs among other guests and everyone was happy with the meals, which are eaten at group tables, allowing you to share your stories from the day! The tent itself was well set up, spacious and loved the lion decor. We had a view of the river and a peaceful spot to sit and read in the afternoons between game drives. It was great for a couple who wanted to really enjoy the wildlife and have some quiet and privacy in-between the adventures!
So many animals!!

Wow!! The wildlife!! So many lions and cubs. Also, cheetah, leopard, giraffes, and tons of hippos! Our Maasai guides were great and made sure we had the best experience possible on our game drives! We loved hearing the animals at night as they wandered around the camp. And breakfast in the middle of the great migration?! Yes please!! Our entire trip was a dream! If we make it back to African again (fingers crossed), we will definitely be back to this camp!
A wonderful stay & game viewing at Porini Lion Camp

We very much enjoyed our stay at Porini Lion Camp. It is more of a "pure" tented camp. Great food for such a remote place! Also a media tent with good internet access. You are very close to animals here. We found the game viewing in the Olare Motogi Conservancy to be EXCELLENT. The views of the surrounding Maasai Mara National Reserve were just breathtaking. The fresh air! Our driver / guide was BENSON and accompanying was guide ANDERSON. Together they made a terrific team, always looking for animals. They set up a memorable breakfast in the foothills of the Mara - just incredible views. We stayed in the family tent - lots of room with a shared living area. The staff was extremely helpful and attentive.
