A Gold Level guide with the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association, Zarek also holds qualifications with FGASA and CyberTracker in wildlife tracking and interpretation. A fourth-generation Kenyan, Mohanjeet grew up among the forests of Kenya’s highlands, where he developed a deep connection with Africa’s wildlife and the communities who live alongside it. He holds a doctorate in Plant Science from the United States and is a qualified Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association (KPSGA) safari guide.
Mohanjeet has spent many years working at the intersection of tourism, conservation and community development, serving on the boards of organisations including the Kenya Tourism Board, African Wildlife Foundation Kenya, African Conservation Centre and Maasai Mara Conservancies Association, as well as previously chairing Ecotourism Kenya.
Mohanjeet brings a particular depth of knowledge and perspective: an understanding of the natural world shaped by science, conservation and years of experience working with communities and protected areas across Africa. His passion is not simply for seeing wildlife, but for understanding the ecosystems, people and conservation efforts that make these extraordinary wildernesses possible.

You will be met on your arrival at Brazzaville International Airport, and transferred to The Kempinski Hotel for one night.
9th - 11th March - Ndzehi Concession, Odzala-Kokoua National Park
Approximate flight time 2 hours
Private flight from Brazzaville to Mboko airstrip in Odzala-Kokoua National Park (departs 1pm, Mondays & Thursdays, approx. 2-hour flight).
12th & 13th March - Odzala-Kokoua National Park
Approximate road transfer time 2 hours.
Enjoy breakfast and one last venture into Ngaga’s pristine rainforest before embarking on a transfer through the park to Mboko Lodge, where you will rest for lunch.
After lunch, set off on kayaks down the Lekoli River on a gentle safari where you may encounter monkeys, elephants, forest buffalo, and a colorful array of birds along the river edge as you drift past and make your way to Lango Bai. Finish the journey on foot and arrive in time for a refreshing sundowner and revel in your surroundings.
During your time at Lango Lodge, explore the wildlife-rich baïs, Lekoli River and surrounding forests on guided walks, following elephant trails through streams and wetlands where you may encounter Forest Buffalo, Forest Elephants, bongo and abundant birdlife.

Set forth as the dawn breaks on an early morning walking safari followed by breakfast before you depart Lango. Follow a raised wooden walkway through the wetlands and hop on the vehicle for a game drive transfer to Mboko Lodge, situated where the forest meets the savanna.
16th March - Odzala-Kokoua National Park - Brazzaville
Approximate flight time 2 hours
Depart after breakfast on a game drive through the savanna to Mboko airstrip. Kamba’s private plane will be waiting to fly you back to Brazzaville to connect with your international flight or overnight at The Kempinski Hotel (additional cost) to connect with onward travel.

My connection with Africa began through years of travelling across the continent.

FAQs — Escorted Journey to Odzala-Kokoua National Park
Odzala-Kokoua National Park is in the Republic of the Congo, which is a different country from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This distinction is important, as the security situations and travel advice for the two countries are very different.
Odzala is a remote wilderness destination and travel is undertaken as part of an organised safari, with experienced guides and local teams accompanying guests throughout the journey. The itinerary uses scheduled flights and organised transfers rather than independent travel through remote areas.
As with any journey to a remote wilderness, there are inherent risks, including tropical conditions, wildlife encounters, remote medical facilities and challenging terrain. Guests must follow the instructions of their guides and have comprehensive travel insurance, including appropriate emergency and medical evacuation cover.
No. The Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are two separate countries in Central Africa. Odzala-Kokoua NationalPark is located in the Republic of the Congo, sometimes referred to as Congo-Brazzaville, with Brazzaville as its capital. It is not in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, sometimes referred to as Congo-Kinshasa.
This exclusive departure is limited to just a few guests, along with fellow traveller Dr Mohanjeet Brar and Guide and host Zarek Cockar, creating an exceptionally intimate safari experience. Western Lowland Gorilla tracking is conducted in smaller groups of no more than four guests at a time.
The escorted safari takes place from 8th - 16th March 2027 and lasts eight nights and nine days. Places are limited to a small number of guests and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
On arrival, you will spend one night at The Hotel Kempinski in Brazzaville, followed by three nights at Ngaga Lodge, two nights at Lango Lodge and two nights at Mboko Lodge. Each lodge offers a different perspective on the Congo Basin, from dense rainforest and gorilla habitat at Ngaga to the wildlife-rich Lango Baï and the rivers, forest and savanna around Mboko.
The journey is guided and hosted by renowned Gold Safari Guide Zarek Cockar. Dr Mohanjeet Brar, Managing Director of Gamewatchers Safaris, joins as a fellow traveller, bringing a wealth of experience in conservation and responsible tourism.
Western Lowland Gorilla tracking is a key part of the experience at Ngaga Lodge, which is located close to a long-established gorilla research site. The itinerary includes two gorilla tracking permits, allowing guests to undertake two guided gorilla tracking experiences in the rainforest. As with all wildlife encounters, sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Gorilla tracking takes place on foot through dense rainforest and can involve uneven, muddy or wet terrain, streams and steep sections. Guests should be comfortable walking for several hours in challenging tropical conditions. The pace is adapted where possible to the group and conditions, but a reasonable level of fitness and mobility is recommended.
Odzala is home to an extraordinary diversity of Congo Basin wildlife. Depending on location and conditions, encounters may include Forest Elephants, Forest Buffalo, bongo, hippos, monkeys, spotted hyenas and a remarkable variety of birdlife. Chimpanzees may also be heard in the forest, while the wildlife-rich baïs provide exceptional opportunities for observation.
The journey goes far beyond gorilla tracking. Activities include guided rainforest walks, baï walks, night walks and drives, kayaking, boating and river cruises, as well as opportunities to experience local communities and learn about the forest and its conservation. The itinerary explores three distinct environments around Ngaga Lodge, Lango Lodge and Mboko Lodge.
Yes. Odzala is close to the equator, so temperatures remain relatively consistent throughout the year and wildlife is present year-round. March falls within the drier season, although rainfall is possible and conditions in the rainforest can be wet at any time. This makes Odzala a destination that can be visited throughout the year, with each season offering a different experience.
This safari is for curious, adventurous travellers who value rarity, exploration and a deeper connection with nature and conservation. It is ideal for those looking to travel far beyond Africa’s familiar safari circuit and experience a remote wilderness with very few other visitors.
