Visit Kimondo Safari Camp

Kimondo Safari Camp – one of the prestigious Asilia chain of camps and lodges – is a small luxury eco-friendly mobile camp which moves with the migration, splitting the year between the north and south of the Serengeti, just like the millions of wildebeest which move with it.

As a migration camp, Kimondo follows the herds of antelope as they migrate across the plains in the Serengeti – the most famous wilderness region on earth.

From July to October it is well-placed on the dramatic Lamai Wedge near the famous scenes of the herds crossing the Mara River. And in December to March it is in the lush grasslands of the southern Serengeti where the herds head to calve.

Kimondo Camp’s temporary structures are of handcrafted wood and canvas – in the style of the traditional safari camps of a bygone era. However, guests need not sacrifice their creature comforts as the high quality furnishings ensure elegance and sophistication in an exotic blend of North African influences and the romance of a vintage East African safari.

With just eight comfortable tents Kimondo offers an intimate safari experience; a sumptuous taste of how the early explorers discovered the wonders of East Africa.

Unlike a permanent lodge, Kimondo Camp has the benefit of relocating to ensure it is always perfectly placed for the best viewing of the herds of wildebeest as they travel on their never-ending circuit of the Serengeti.

Game drives in the area give visitors the opportunity to see a vast array of animals including Africa’s Big Five. Cultural visits to tribal villages can also be arranged.

Location

Kimondo in the North (July – October): closest airstrip: Lamai (75 mins)

A golden triangle of grassland between the Mara River and Kenyan border, the Lamai Wedge is regarded as one of the highlights of the entire Serengeti ecosystem. A gathering point for the herds that have made it safely across the Mara River, it’s a region rich in wildebeest and antelope. And, of course, the predators that pursue them.

Kimondo is placed here from July to October, offering unparalleled Big Five sightings just minutes from camp. The Mara River, famed for dramatic scenes as the herds attempt the treacherous crossing, is just a short drive away allowing you to experience both the drama of the migration and the stillness of the Serengeti.

Kimondo in the South (December – March): closest airstrip: Serengeti South (25 mins)

In November the camp is closed – leaving the land it leaves as if untouched – and come December it opens deep in the southern Serengeti in the shade of a stately Acacia Tortillis tree.

It’s here on these grassy plains that the millions of wildebeest who have wandered hundreds of kilometres have a chance to calve, graze and rest… forever keeping a watchful eye out for hungry lion and cheetah, of course.

Set in a natural amphitheatre with outstanding views of a permanent water hole, Kimondo’s southern home is an idyllic one. Superb game viewing can be had on the daily game excursions, or simply enjoyed from the private terrace of your safari suite.

Accommodation

The camp has an exotic North African style – with rich hand-woven rugs, burnished copper lanterns and interesting artefacts. Meals are either taken outside under the stars or in the dining tent. The mess tent is full of comfy places to relax and books to browse.

There are just eight guest tents. Each is spacious with either king size or twin beds and large private terrace on which to relax in the afternoon. Each guest tent has en-suite facilities including a flush w.c., hot and cold running water and the traditional safari shower. Privacy is assured with a distance of 15 to 20 meters between tents.
