Once reserved exclusively for Kenya’s colonial Governors and their royal visitors, the Governors Main Camp is today popular with both animals and their admirers visiting the Maasai Mara and is currently hosting the BBC film crew for Planet Earth Live. The camp emphasis is on enjoyment of the wildlife heritage of Africa in the highest possible style.

Situated along the banks of the Mara River in the west of the Maasai Mara Game Reserve Governors Main Camp is an icon of standards in luxury tented camping, putting particular emphasis on comfort and a seamless service, all complimented by the sort of good food which would have been impossible to savour in the bygone days of the grand safari. Maintaining these unique qualities as a tradition, the camp has been refined and improved over the years.

Accommodation

The site and size of a safari camp is critical to its vitality. Governors’ Main Camp with 37 tents set amongst the trees along the Mara river boasts of unrivalled views over the plains and is visited and re-visited every year by guests who find the continued excellence, personal style and family feeling quite reassuring.

All guest facilities are under canvas and keep the authentic, traditional safari atmosphere. All guest tents have en-suite bathrooms with shower and basin, running cold and hot water as well as a flush toilet. Gas and paraffin lamps are used for lighting. The privately located Justus Suite is perfect for honeymoon couples, as is tent 37 which has incredible views over the Mara plains and its wildlife. The dining tent, our campfire and the bar tent are the centre of the camp. Breakfast and lunch are served buffet style, alfresco. Dinner is served in the dining tent. For dinner the menu offers a choice of four courses, including a choice of main courses

Activities

Various activities are available throughout the day including: 3 daily game drives in open side 4×4 safari vehicles with trained drivers; Hot air balloon safaris that give tremendous views over the Mara plains and its wildlife are also arranged from the camp; Guided game walks in the African bush with experienced guides and cultural visits to the nearby Maasai villages are quite an eye opener experience.

Next to the reception is a small gallery with local paintings and handcrafts as well as a small souvenir shop. A traditional campfire is lit at sunset every evening and after dinner clients enjoy sitting around the campfire, reminiscing about their safari in its evocative light.

Governors Main Camp is accessible from Nairobi and other safari destinations in the region depending by flying into the nearby Musiara airstrip. Guests are met on arrival and transferred by a 4×4 safari vehicle to the camp, approximately 15 minute’s drive away.
