Nairobi National Park
Just a short distance from Nairobi’s city centre lies one of Africa’s most remarkable protected areas—Nairobi National Park. It is the only national park in the world located within a capital city, offering visitors the extraordinary chance to encounter lions, giraffes, rhinos, and over 400 bird species with the city skyline in the distance.
Covering 117 km², the park is a mosaic of habitats: sweeping grasslands dotted with acacia, riverine forests, rocky gorges, and seasonal wetlands created by man-made dams that attract hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds. This diversity supports an impressive variety of wildlife, from grazing herbivores to the predators that follow them, including cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, and Nairobi’s resident lion prides.
Nairobi National Park is also a conservation success story. It is a leading black rhino sanctuary, giving visitors one of the best opportunities in Kenya to see these endangered animals thriving in their natural environment. The park plays a vital role in reintroducing rhinos to other protected areas across the country.
During the rainy season, wildlife disperses into the neighbouring Athi-Kapiti Plains and Kitengela migration corridor. In the dry months, the animals return to the park, creating superb game-viewing opportunities year-round. Migratory birds also pass through from March to April, adding seasonal highlights for keen birders.
