Aberdare National Park

Rising from the fertile highlands of central Kenya, the Aberdare National Park forms part of the spectacular Aberdare Mountain Range—a landscape of dramatic contrasts where mist-shrouded peaks soar to 3,930 metres and deep forested ravines cut through lush slopes. Established in 1950, the park protects an area of high-altitude moorland, dense rainforest, creating one of Kenya’s most diverse ecosystems and a vital water catchment for the country’s central region.

The Aberdares are home to an impressive variety of wildlife. Visitors may encounter elephants, buffaloes, black rhinos, leopards, and several species of monkey, including the black-and-white colobus and Sykes’ monkey. The elusive bongo, a rare forest antelope, roams the bamboo thickets, while eland and smaller cats inhabit the open moorlands above.

Birdwatchers will find the park equally rewarding, with over 250 recorded species such as the Jackson’s francolin, sunbirds, plovers, and an array of raptors including African goshawks, Ayres’ hawk-eagles, and mountain buzzards. Crystal-clear streams and rivers that run through the park are ideal for trout fishing, while the cool air and panoramic viewpoints make it perfect for guided walks and picnics.

Accommodation within the park includes the historic Treetops Lodge—famed for its royal connection—and The Ark, a uniquely designed lodge built in the shape of Noah’s Ark. Both offer day game viewing from raised decks overlooking waterholes, where elephants, buffaloes, and rhinos gather under the cover of darkness.

A visit to Aberdare National Park offers a refreshing contrast to Kenya’s savannah reserves—an enchanting blend of mountain wilderness, forest sanctuary, and timeless highland beauty.
