Karibu! Kim to Kenya!

March 2020 | Kim Spangler

My second safari with Gamewatchers came just 6 months after my first safari. I spoke with Julie Roggow and told her I needed to return to Kenya to see rhinos, specifically the northern white rhinos, and visit a few more places. Julie set me up with the perfect itinerary.

First I visited Meru National Park where the movie Born Free was filmed. I stayed at the beautiful Rhino River Camp for 3 nights. Camp manager Silas (who I had met last year) was there and made my stay so fun. I saw the red Tana River and the rhinos in the conservancy. And my guides Ben & Peterson took my photo by the equator sign!

From there I traveled to Porini Rhino Camp, where I saw Fatu & Najin, the last 2 northern white rhinos! It was incredible to get so close to them! I also visited Jane Goodall’s chimpanzees sanctuary, an amazing place. The camp’s watering hole gave me such up close encounter with a curious giraffe. And then a treat to also meet Mohanjeet Brar & his family who helped me celebrate my birthday there!

Finally I flew south to the Maasai Mara where I did a night at Porini Mara Camp, a hot air balloon ride over the Mara, and then 2 nights back at the incredible Porini Lion Camp. The Mara was lush and green, and the wildlife spectacular. I met so many new great guides & camp staff… Ben, Peterson, Julius, Edward, Hezzy, Victor, Nelson, to name a few. I returned to a very different USA on March 13, with the virus pandemic & quarantine. But thanks to impeccable timing, my dream to return to Kenya had been accomplished. It was magical and the memories will help sustain me as I wait to travel again.

Thank You, Asante, Sawa Sawa – I’m again grateful for Porini! ~ Kim
