MATEMWE BEACH HOUSE, ZANZIBAR

The north-east part of Zanzibar Island is known as Matemwe. This area is famous for its fine white sand beaches, the contrasting colours of the Indian Ocean and the beauty of the coral reef around the Mnemba Island. Here the tides govern the rhythm of the day. At high tide the fisherman stream across the lagoon in their billowing dhows, while at low tide the sea goes right out revealing a fascinating reef where you can explore for hours.

Matemwe boasts one of the best stretches of beach on the east coast. This beach has not been noticeably altered by tourism and remains an important thoroughfare for locals. Activities such as fishing and seaweed harvesting are still key to the local economy. Matemwe is just 60 minutes drive from Stone Town, allowing for easy day trips and excursions to the many different and varied interesting places on offer in Zanzibar.

On the chalk white Matemwe beach lies one of Zanzibar’s most homely family escapes. Matemwe Beach House is the perfect holiday home for a family or small group wanting a private slice of this beautiful coast line. This privately contained house is just a stone’s throw from the sea where activities such as snorkelling, diving, canoeing, reef walks and so much more await you. The sea breeze, palm trees and the sound of the waves are a constant reminder of the tranquil setting that this house is situated.

The three bedroom traditional beach house sits just five paces from the beach with your private pool deck that lies between the two. The house sits in its own enclosure and looks out over the plunge pool to the beach and blue sea beyond, both of which are accessed by a private path and gate.

Two of the rooms are en suite with a third situated on a mezzanine floor – ideal for children. You will be looked after by your own team of staff led by a Matemwe chef and butler who ensure that the food and experience at the Beach House is tailored to your family or group.

ACTIVITIES

One of the main attractions of Matemwe is the world class diving at Mnemba Atoll. This area of ocean offers some of the best snorkelling and diving possible off Zanzibar, with a high chance of seeing turtles and wild dolphins in addition to the diverse and colourful coral reef fish.

But for many guests simply doing nothing is considered a serious activity. Do not be surprised if you are quite content to simply soak up the sun lying in a hammock with a good book or cocktail.

Regardless of whether you are feeling lazy or energetic the lodge has a number of activities and experiences on offer.
