Day 1: Antananarivo
You will be met and welcomed on arrival off your flight at the international arrival hall. Please look out for a sign with your name after you exit the restricted area with your luggages. You will then be led to your vehicle for your private transfer to Maison Galliéni.  Settle into your room and spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 2: Antananarivo - Morondava
Today you have the opportunity to visit the Old city and upper town of Antananarivo with your guide to enjoy he picturesque ambience of the noblemen residence area, with both well-kept traditional houses, the colonial houses, palaces, cathedrals, the charm of the narrow, curved, upslope cobblestoned streets and ensemble of cute traditional Malagasy houses built entirely of wood.Â
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Morondava.
On arrival into Morondava, you will be met at the domestic arrivals hall and once your luggage has been collected, you will then be led to your vehicle for your private transfer.

Day 3: Morondava
Today visit Kirindy Forest, home of the Fosa, the largest mammal carnivore in Madagascar. Kirindy is one of Madagascar’s most threatened ecosystems: its dry deciduous forests. It is also famous for the giant jumping rat, but is also home to seven species of lemur and a number of endemic reptiles.
On the way back, visit the world famous Baobab Alley to photograph the dramatic sunset over these endemic trees. Â Its striking landscape draws travelers from around the world, making it one of the most visited locations in the region. The area is not a national park, and the trees are threatened by further deforestation, effluent from encroaching rice paddies and sugarcane plantations, and bush and forest fires. Despite its popularity as a tourist destination, the area has no visitor center or gate fees, and local residents receive little income from
tourism.

Day 4: Morondava - Antsirabe

Leave the region of the Menabe to return to Antsirabe. On the way, you will have the opportunity to make several stops to photograph the hilly landscapes of Madagascar’s Midwest. During the journey, there will be stops to enjoy the views over the rice fields, the mountains and the traditional villages of the highlands.Â

Day 5: Antsirabe - Ranomafana

Continue your journey heading south across the highlands to reach Ambositra, the Malagasy hand crafts’capital located 105 km from Antsirabe. In this city known for its Zafimaniry Art, visit different hand crafter workshops, wood carvers who make beautiful statues, furnitures and souvenirs.
After lunch in Ambositra, depart to reach the rainforest in Ranomafana for a night visit in search of animals such as the Fosa (small puma), chameleons, frogs and the smallest lemur in the world: Microcebe.

Day 6: Ranomafana
Today delve into the heart of Ranomafana National Park, an ecological gem, spanning over 41,600 hectares of tropical rainforest. Â Ranomafana National Park boasts a diverse ecosystem, harboring rare and endemic species. Among its notable inhabitants are the golden bamboo lemur, greater bamboo lemur, black and white ruffed lemur,
Milne-Edwards sifaka, as well as an array of bird species including pitta-like ground rollers, blue vangas, short-legged ground rollers, and brown mesites.

Day 7: Ranomafana - Ranohira

Leave the highlands of Madagascar and enter a new microclimate: the dry bush and semi desert of southern Madagascar. The first stop of the day is in the small town of Ambalavao, with the opportunity to visit the natural Paper Factory Antemoro, an inlaid paper
made from plants and flowers which is exported nowadays everywhere to make beautiful greeting cards.
After lunch in Ambalavao, Â leave the highlands to continue the journey towards the South with its semi-dry landscape, arriving in Ranohira later in the afternoon to enjoy a very unique landscape.
Take a captivating tour of Fianarantsoa, Home to some of the oldest Protestant and Lutheran cathedrals on the island, as well as the oldest theological seminary (also Lutheran), the city has played a pivotal role in shaping the educational landscape of the nation. There is also a change to explore the Anja Community Reserve. Â Designated as a protected area reserve by the Government of Madagascar in 1999, the Anja forest spans
30 hectares, enveloping visitors in a sanctuary of ecological richness, where the intricate balance of ecosystems thrives under the protective gaze of the community.
The stewardship of the reserve falls under the care of the local association, Anja Miray. This transfer of management responsibilities underscores the commitment of the community to safeguarding the natural heritage of Anja. Accompanied by your park ranger, explore  through the canyons and oases of Isalo and its lunar landscape to reach some waterfalls.  There are 77 species of birds that live in Isalo among which the rare and famous Benson rock-thrush ( Pseudocossyphus bensoni ).
During that hike, you will see different species of lemurs, including the world famous ring tailed lemur. Â You will also have the opportunity to relax in this environment and swim in the natural pools.

Day 9: Journey to Toliara: From Plateaus to the Mozambique Channel

Through Dry Deciduous Forests: The scenery transitions as you cross dry deciduous forests, where the flora adapts to the arid conditions. The resilient beauty of these landscapes reveals nature’s ability to thrive in diverse environments.
Encountering the Iconic Baobabs: Our journey introduces you to the iconic baobabs, silhouetted against the horizon along National Road 7. These ancient sentinels, with their distinctive shapes, are a hallmark of Madagascar’s flora. As you approach the Mozambique Channel, the presence of these majestic trees signals our proximity to the coast.
From Plateaus to Coastal Vibes: Covering a distance of 240 kilometres, the drive takes you from the elevated plateaus to the coastal allure of the Mozambique Channel. Toliara beckons, and the anticipation of coastal landscapes, vibrant culture, and a taste of the Indian Ocean’s embrace awaits.
Zombitse-Vohibasia National Park: You will visit the Zombitse-Vohibasia National Park which constitutes the most important remnant of dry deciduous forest of Madagascar. Zombitse-Vohibasia acts as a transition zone between the dry and the humid forests of Madagascar. Therefore the flora is especially rich within the protected area. Baobabs and several orchids are particulary common. The number of animal species living here is also remarkable. 15 small mammals, 2 carnivorous and 8 lemur species, such as the Verrauxs sifaka, red-fronted brown lemur, ring-tailed lemur, pale fork-marked lemur and the Hubbard´s sportive lemur can be observed here. Birds are also a park highlight. There are 85 species, most of them endemic like the rare Appert´s greenbul, which only lives in this forest. 33 reptile and 8 amphibian species have been reported in Zombitse, such as the Standing´s day gecko, which is also local endemic to the Park.
Four different short and pretty easy circuits (from one to five hours walk) are offered by the park authorities in order to allow visitors to discover the richness and diversity of this last natural refuge.
The Antsokay Arboretum was established around 1980. Located 12km from the city of Toliara, 2 km north of the Tropic of Capricorn and 3 km from the Mozambique Canal waters, the Antsokay Arboretum means a small nearby hamlet of limestone found which are used to make quicklime.
The guided tour through the botanical trail will open your eyes to the ingenuity of a diverse flora that has adapted, sometimes in extraordinary ways, to the heat and drought of this region. You will also discover the relationship that has developed between mankind and the plant kingdom, through the use of medicinal plants.
The arboretum has a collection of over 900 plant species from the southwest of Madagascar, 90% are endemic to the region and 80% have medicinal properties. Among these many succulent species are recognized as endangered.
More than 25 species of reptiles and mammals are found there. Among the most common are the: Furcifer verrucosus, oplurus cyclurus and Phelsuma mutabilis. The arboretum is also home to several species of mammals including the lemur Microcebus griseorufus and tenrec Echinops telfairi, both nocturnal. The lemurs are the smallest lemurs of Madagascar, measuring only 12cm long and can be found asleep in tree holes during the day, they eat insects and fruit.

Day 10: Toliara - Anakao

(Boat departure is scheduled every mornig at 09.30am) Transfert to Anakao.
The safest and fastest way to reach Anakao, 45km South from Tulear is by speedboat. Anakao is not an island. A huge river, Onilahy, blocks the path at the level of Saint Agustin.
Before 9:30am at the port, you embark on a powerful speed boat which will take you comfortably in less than one hour to Anakao.
After going along Sarodrano’s sand bank and leaving the lagoon, the route crosses the Tropic of Capricorn at the mouth of the Onilahy river. This is where you can see whales (June to September), dolphins and flying fish. Finally, you will go along the coast between Soalara and Anakao, seaside or lagoon side, depending on the tides. Our skilled skipper will drop you off right in front your hotel on Anakao’s beach.
Anakao is a small fishermen village located 45km south and only easily accessible by boat. You will reach your hotel before lunch time. Forget crowded places and be seduced by the beautiful Andovoke bay, over a kilometre and a half long white sand beach with turquoise waters.
Clearly visible on the horizon are the breakers that smash against one of the stretches of the longest coral reefs in the world.

Day 11: Anakao
Tsimanampetsotsa visit (picnic in Ambola): Today embark on one of the SUV and go towards the Tsimanampetsotsa National Park, named after its spectacular lake.This huge lake is one the largest lake in Madagascar and lies in the most arid zone of the island, which receives only around 300 mm rain each year.
There are two main landscapes inside the park: a calcareous plateau covered with dense xerophilous thickets (a locally endemic spiny forest), huge baobabs and banyan trees, and the sand dunes along the coast covered by a grassy blanket. The park also has numerous caves and sinkholes, which are the result of an underground stream. This is where scientists recently discovered remains of giant lemurs during an underwater search expedition.
Tsimanampetsotsa is a birders paradise. More than 100 species are found here, including pink, greater and dwarf flamingos forming big colonies on the lake, 5 coua species, Archbold´s newtonia, Madagascar plover, red-shouldered vanga or Lafresnaye´s vanga.
Apart from birds, there are 12 species of mammals, among them the extremely rare and local endemic Grandidier´s mongoose and 4 lemur species: ring-tailed lemur, Verreaux´s sifaka, Gray-brown mouse lemur and white-footed sportive lemur.
Among the 39 reptile species, the most significant one is the radiated turtle, which is endemic to this region and extremely endangered to extinction.
After the park visit and a picnic, Â spend some time on the beautiful beach of Ambola before returning to your hotel.

Day 12 - Anakao
Today you have the opportunity to sail to Nosy Ve, a small 1km long inhabited island. It is a sacred place for people of Anakao. The crossing takes less than 1 hour to go depending on the winds. The island is one of the few places in the world known as a place of reproduction of red-tailed tropicbird (Phaethon rubricauda). We can observe adults nesting with baby birds. This island is also a good snorkeling spot and has an amazing beach. For once in your life, you may feel like you are Robinson Crusoe. Return to Anakao early afternoon before the wind gets too gusty.

Day 13 - Anakao - Antananarivo
Anakao – Toliara (boat transfer)
(The return trip to Toliara from Anakao usually leaves early, no later than 7:30am).  The boat will pick you up in front of your hotel. Upon arriving in Toliara,  you  will transfer to the domestic terminal so that you can board your Tsaradia flight to Antananarivo.

Day 12 - Anakao
Today you have the opportunity to sail to Nosy Ve, a small 1km long inhabited island. It is a sacred place for people of Anakao. The crossing takes less than 1 hour to go depending on the winds. The island is one of the few places in the world known as a place of reproduction of red-tailed tropicbird (Phaethon rubricauda). We can observe adults nesting with baby birds. This island is also a good snorkeling spot and has an amazing beach. For once in your life, you may feel like you are Robinson Crusoe. Return to Anakao early afternoon before the wind gets too gusty.

Day 13 - Anakao - Antananarivo
Anakao – Toliara (boat transfer)
(The return trip to Toliara from Anakao usually leaves early, no later than 7:30am).  The boat will pick you up in front of your hotel. Upon arriving in Toliara,  you  will transfer to the domestic terminal so that you can board your Tsaradia flight to Antananarivo.

You will then transfer to the international terminal in a timely manner so that you can board your flight on time.

Jambo, I’m Tommy Mees, most people call me Tom.
My connection with Africa began through years of travelling across the continent.
I later spent more than twelve years managing safari camps and lodges while supporting conservation initiatives including beekeeping and tree-planting projects.
Having travelled extensively throughout Eastern and Southern Africa, I developed a deep appreciation for authentic wilderness experiences and the conservation-focused approach of the Porini Camps.
I am originally from Belgium and now based in Spain, though my heart has always remained in Africa.

FAQs — 13 Day Madagascar Experience
The Madagascar Experience is a 13-day guided journey that includes accommodation, domestic flights within Madagascar, private transfers, guided excursions, national park entrance fees and most meals as detailed in the itinerary. Highlights include the Avenue of the Baobabs, Kirindy Forest, Ranomafana National Park, Isalo National Park and the beaches of Anakao.
Madagascar is home to wildlife found nowhere else on Earth. During this itinerary you may see several species of lemurs, colourful chameleons, geckos, endemic birds, tortoises and, in Kirindy Forest, the elusive fosa. Wildlife sightings vary with the season and are guided by experienced local naturalists.
Yes. This itinerary is an excellent introduction to Madagascar, combining the island's most iconic landscapes, unique wildlife, national parks, cultural experiences and coastal relaxation. It offers a well-balanced mix of adventure, nature and leisure for first-time visitors.
The itinerary includes a combination of guided walks in national parks, nature trails and sightseeing, with a moderate level of activity. Most walks can be enjoyed by anyone with a reasonable level of fitness, although some rainforest trails and park paths may be uneven.
Madagascar can be visited throughout much of the year, with the dry season from April to November generally offering the best conditions for wildlife viewing, walking and exploring the island's diverse landscapes. Travel during this period also provides excellent opportunities to visit Anakao and Isalo National Park.
Ranomafana National Park is one of Madagascar's most important rainforest reserves and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is renowned for its rich biodiversity, including several species of endemic lemurs, colourful chameleons, orchids and exceptional birdlife, making it one of the island's premier wildlife destinations.
The Avenue of the Baobabs is one of Madagascar's most iconic landscapes, where towering centuries-old baobab trees line a rural road near Morondava. It is particularly spectacular at sunrise and sunset and is one of the country's most photographed natural landmarks.
Anakao offers the perfect opportunity to relax after your safari. Activities include snorkelling, boat trips, visiting the protected island of Nosy Ve, enjoying fresh seafood, observing local Vezo fishing traditions and relaxing on beautiful white-sand beaches along the Mozambique Channel.
