The push to save The Great Migration In the Maasai Mara
As global tourism continues to grow, Africa’s wildlife areas are under increasing pressure. In Kenya’s Maasai Mara ecosystem, rising visitor numbers have begun to affect the very wildlife spectacles travellers come to see, including a noticeable decline in the wildebeest migrating through the reserve. This has created a new urgency for sustainable management.
The discussion now centres on how to protect these natural processes without limiting the economic opportunities tourism brings. Dr Mohanjeet Brar, Managing Director of Gamewatchers Safaris, contributes to this conversation by highlighting the role of community-led conservancies such as Ol Kinyei Conservancy.
He explains that Ol Kinyei—one of the first community conservancies established in the Mara region—was created to secure vital wildlife corridors while giving landowners a reliable income through low-impact tourism. Its success demonstrates that carefully managed conservancy models can relieve pressure on overcrowded reserves, protect migration routes, and allow wildlife and communities to thrive side by side.
