Location
Nestled between the peaks of Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount
Meru Game Lodge & Sanctuary lies midway between Kilimanjaro International
Airport and Arusha. The lodge is located within 33 acres of mature, well
manicured gardens bounded on one side by the tranquil waters of the Usa
River and on the other by the Sanctuary where our wildlife and birdlife
reside. This wildlife and birdlife provide many of our guests with their
first exciting game viewing experience. Access to the Lodge and Sanctuary
is entirely by Tarmac Road.
Brief History
Established in 1959, the lodge was created to provide intimate accommodation
to discerning lovers of both wildlife and nature. The sanctuary was founded
to offer refuge to orphaned and injured animals and to prepare them for
their return to the wild. The lodge & sanctuary combine to offer you
a truly unique experience during your stay in Arusha.
The Lodge
The many carefully planned facilities available at the Lodge combine
to provide visitors with an unforgettable experience of Africa at its
very best.
The terrace, shaded by enormous old Mango trees, enjoys magnificent views
over mature, carefully tended gardens to the Sanctuary beyond. The lounge,
with its enormous picture windows and comfortable furniture, provides
for complete relaxation in intimate surroundings. The bar is well stocked
with a wide selection of spirits, beers and minerals which are complemented
by a carefully selected collection of fine wines and the fine dining room
provides the perfect setting for a relaxing
meal, prepared and served by our attentive yet very discreet staff.
Accommodation
The lodge comprises 2 suites and 15 double or twin en-suite bedrooms.
As you would expect in a property of this standard, the design and character
of the rooms are as individualistic as the Lodge itself. All rooms have
a veranda with comfortable chairs where guests may relax during the late
afternoons enjoying the peace of the surroundings, soaking up the unique
atmosphere of the Lodge and watching the wildlife and birdlife. ‘Intimate
Places’ have created a completely new look for the guest bedrooms at Mount
Meru Game Lodge to include single, Queen and King size four-poster, wrought
iron beds with fitted mosquito nets, continental quilts (sheets and blankets
are available on request), large and small pillows for
reading and sleeping and much more…
Facilities
Carefully concealed behind the distinct ‘old world charm’ of Mount Meru
Game Lodge is an array of modern conveniences which are designed to further
enhance your stay with us. These include the very latest ‘direct to satellite’
internet connectivity which is available for use by guests via a high
specification computer located in the boutique. Wireless internet connectivity
is also available throughout the main building of the lodge, in the gardens
and in most guest bedrooms.
A satellite telephone system is also available for use at reception from
which you can call your family and friends all over the world for as little
as US $1 per minute.
The Sanctuary
The main emphasis of the Game Sanctuary is to provide safe haven to African
plain game and bird life. These include Eland, Ostriches, Waterbuck, Zebra,
Buffalo and of course the enormous variety of birds which
come to feed, breed and enjoy the unique freedom offered by our very safe
environment.
The majority of our animals were once either orphaned or badly injured
and were brought to the Sanctuary for rehabilitation. By choosing to stay
with us, you will also be playing a very important role in helping these
animals since the activities of the Sanctuary are entirely financed by
the lodge. The animals and birdlife at Mount Meru Game Lodge and Sanctuary
are certain to delight all of our guests and visitors.
Nature
The Usa River, the magnificent views of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru,
the wildlife, birdlife, trees, plants and shrubs all combine to make Mount
Meru Game Lodge & Sanctuary a truly exquisite natural wonderland.
Activities
Aside from the more usual excursions, we offer you the possibility of
visiting the area immediately surrounding the Lodge. These walks include
‘Cultural and Educational’ visits to local villages and farms as well
as sightseeing tours to some of the natural forests and scenic spots in
the area. Each walk is carefully planned according to our Guests wishes.
As an added bonus, there are different forms of wildlife and birdlife
which populate the area to be seen such as Bushbuck, Duiker and even troops
of Colobus Monkeys. These walks are offered free of any charge to guests
of the lodge and can be booked through reception between the hours of
9.00 am and 5.00 pm.
A Special Place
to Stay
Throughout its long history, the lodge & sanctuary have been a popular
stop over for many VIP’s and Government visitors. Various Presidents of
African countries, celebrities, and members of European Royal families
have stayed with us.
The management and staff of Intimate Places therefore look forward to
welcoming you to Mount Meru Game Lodge & Sanctuary in a time-honoured
tradition.
