Mara Toto Camp

Mara Toto Camp is located within the greater Masai Mara ecosystem and is ideal for guests who are looking for a safari adventure away from the crowds with the comfort and intimacy of a small luxury camp. Meaning “baby” in Swahili, the name Toto refers to the camp’s status as the smaller sister property of the established and highly acclaimed Mara Plains Camp.

Mara Toto Camp is in the north central Masai Mara, on the border of the Olare Orok & Mara North Conservancies. It has an idyllic setting in a small bend in the Ntiakitiak River, just a few kilometres downstream from Mara Plains. This site was handpicked by the Jouberts and the current Mara Plains managers, Richard and Lorna. The four of them traversed tireless hours in search of the ‘perfect spot’ for this magical camp, and ended up for a sundowner on this very spot. They looked around and realised ‘this is the place’. And so Mara Toto was born.

The camp is perfect for exploring varied terrain including forested areas as well as savannah plains. This is the heart of Big Cat country, and guests can spend full days exploring the 70,000 acre private Mara North Conservancy where there is a very low tourist density, or head into the famous Masai Mara Game Reserve for its spectacular scenes of river crossings and the game-filled Topi Plains.

Accommodation

Mara Toto Camp consists of just five luxury en-suite tents under the shade of the riverine forest. The tents have been beautifully designed in a style reminiscent of the early days of safari exploration with the decor from local natural materials and hand-picked furnishings such as brass chandeliers and old Indian chests.

Each tent has a flush toilet, bucket shower, plumbed water, 24 hour electricity and a lovely private deck overlooking the river.

Facilities & Activities

The camp is fully inclusive of all activities, high-quality meals, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (excluding imported and premium drinks).

Game drives are by 4x4 open-sided safari vehicles and guests also have the opportunity to visit villages, schools and community projects. Magical hot air balloon rides can also be arranged (at a supplement).
