A safari especially for birdwatchers, escorted by an expert guide and visiting Amboseli, the Rift Valley lakes and the Mara

This safari is escorted by our Maasai bird expert, Wilson ole Kasaine, whose encyclopaedic knowledge will enhance your enjoyment. Wilson is based at Porini Amboseli Camp in Selenkay Conservancy and he will welcome you there and then travel with you on the rest of the safari to Amboseli, Lake Elementaita, Lake Nakuru, Masai Mara, ending in Nairobi with a visit to the Birds Display section at the Nairobi National Museum. Wilson is a silver-rated professional safari guide based at Porini Amboseli Camp and a member of the Maasai Community which owns Selenkay Conservancy.

Kenya has over 1,000 species of birds and is a paradise for birdwatchers who will have the added bonus of also seeing the big game animals for which Kenya is famous. The itinerary includes a variety of habitats to see the widest range of species and goes to Selenkay Conservancy, Amboseli National Park, Lake Elementaita, Lake Nakuru, Masai Mara ending with the Birds section at the Nairobi National Museum. Selenkay is semi-arid bush country, Amboseli has marshes and swampy areas, the rift valley lakes of Elementaita and Nakuru have a wealth of waders, pelicans and flamingos, and the Mara has a huge variety of raptors and species found on the open savannah plains and in the riverine forests.

Itinerary

Day 1

Transfer by road from Nairobi to Porini Amboseli Camp for 2 nights, to be met on arrival by your birding guide, Wilson ole Kasaine. After lunch you will have the chance of some birding in the grounds of the camp, escorted by Wilson. Later in the afternoon you will have an escorted walk to visit a Maasai village to get an insight into the Maasai culture and the daily lives of the people. You will then join the other guests from camp on a drive into the Selenkay conservancy and a sundowner at a scenic spot overlooking Kilimanjaro, returning to camp for dinner.

Day 2

A full day's birding in 4x4 safari vehicle escorted by Wilson, visiting Amboseli National Park with a picnic lunch, returning later in the afternoon to camp with the opportunity for an evening drive in the conservancy. Dinner and overnight at Porini Amboseli Camp.

Day 3

Transfer by road to Nairobi, where you will have lunch and then continue in a customised safari minibus with roof hatch for bird-viewing to Lake Elementaita arriving at Sunbird Lodge in the afternoon to stay 2 nights. Evening walk along the lake shore escorted by Wilson.

Day 4

A full day birding in Lake Nakuru with a picnic lunch, returning to Sunbird Lodge for overnight.

Day 5

Drive to the Masai Mara to stay 2 nights at Mara Porini Camp in the Ol Kinyei Conservancy, Mara. Afternoon drive in the conservancy in open-sided 4x4 escorted by Wilson.

Day 6

Morning and evening drives in the Ol Kinyei Conservancy escorted by Wilson. (Option to stay a 3rd night and have a day in the reserve with picnic lunch)

Day 7

Early morning bird watching drive followed by breakfast and then drive to the airstrip and fly back to Nairobi. Transfer to the Ole Sereni Hotel arriving about 1 pm (lunch not included in price). In the afternoon Wilson will take you to visit the Nairobi National Museum's extensive display of bird specimens collected over the last 60 years, where you can re-cap on all the birds that you have seen on safari and get a further appreciation the huge range of bird species found in Kenya. Overnight Ole Sereni on B&B basis.

Day 8

Transfer to airport to fly home or on to Mombasa.

Prices include: Pick up in Nairobi then road transfer to Amboseli, 2 nights in Porini Amboseli Camp with daily Selenkay Conservancy fees and one day Amboseli National Park entrance fee, Escorted bird watching by Wilson Ole Kasaine & Maasai village visit then afterwards check out and drive to Nairobi, lunch at Carnivore restaurant then continue by road in a 06 seater minivan safari vehicle to Lake Elementaita to arrive for lunch at Sunbird Lodge, later dinner and overnight on full board basis. Next day drive to Lake Nakuru National Park for full day bird watching plus game drive with lunch at Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge, afterwards drive back to Sunbird Lodge for dinner and overnight. Check out and drive in a 06 seater minivan safari vehicle to Masai Mara to arrive at Porini Mara Camp for 2 nights with daily Ol Kinyei & Naboisho Conservancy fees and one day Masai Mara Game Reserve entrance fee and Escorted bird watching by Wilson Ole Kasaine, Porini camps are based on full board basis including soft drinks, beer, house wine, gin & tonic, mineral water, return airstrip transfers, day & night shared game drives in open sided 4x4 safari vehicle with qualified guide, sundowners, walks with Maasai warriors, then last day fly back to Wilson Airport where you will be met and drive to Nairobi National Museum to enjoy the extensive display of bird specimens collected over the last 60 years and later proceed to Ole Sereni Hotel for bed & breakfast (lunch & dinner are not included this day). On the last day transferred to JKI Airport to for departure.

Child rates applicable for 08 – 11 year olds:

1 child sharing with 2 adults, child pays child package price above while the 2 adults pay per adult sharing rate.

1 child sharing with 1 adult, child pays child package price above while the 1 adult pays single adult rate.

2 or 3 children sharing in own tent, each child pays 75% of per adult rate. Child under 8 years not recommended.

Exclusive vehicle use at Porini Camps:

Sole use of the open sided 4x4 safari vehicle during game drive US$ 375 per vehicle per day.

Easter supplement at Sunbird Lodge:

From 29 March to 01 April 2013 inclusive is US$ 40 per person per night.

Christmas & new year supplement at Porini Camps:

On 24, 25, 26, 31 Dec 2012 & 01 Jan 2013 is US$ 40 per person per night.

Late afternoon departure at Porini Camps:

Late departure after 12h00 US$ 125 per person minimum 2 pax (includes lunch, soft drinks and activities before departure in the late afternoon).

Flight supplements:

Schedule flight: For flying from Nairobi to Amboseli US$ 80 per adult return fare & US$ 55 per child (02 – 12 years) return fare OR US$ 50 per adult one way & US$ 35 per child (02 – 12 years) one way.

Charter flight: From 20th December 2012 to 31st March 2013 & from 01st July 2013 to 31st October 2013 we will offer daily charter flights with minimum 2 pax between Nairobi, Wilson Airport and Amboseli, Selenkay Airstrip which is very close to Porini Amboseli Camp & Selenkay Adventure Camp. The supplement will be the same as if using schedule flight as provided above. The charter flight is only 35 minutes departing Nairobi, Wilson Airport at 08h00 and arriving Amboseli, Selenkay Airstrip at 08h35. (Camp’s vehicle transfer to Porini Amboseli Camp or Selenkay Adventure Camp for free).
 
Mombasa: For flying from Masai Mara to Diani/Ukunda/Moi Airport instead of flying to Nairobi US$ 380 per adult & US$ 200 per child 10 – 11 years (one way flight). Includes late departure charge & mandatory $80 park fee.

 

Extra night rate:

For every 2 or 3 night stay one visit into Masai Mara National Reserve is included. Any extra visit into the reserve must pay US$ 80 per person per day on top of above rates.
