Big Cat Safari Tour

Big Cat SafariClick to enlarge

A one week safari of 6 nights / 7 days staying in exclusive smaller properties and offering comfortable accommodation in game-filled wildlife areas.

We visit 3 of Kenya's classic wildlife parks, Amboseli, Lake Nakuru and Maasai Mara, aiming to see a wide variety of wildlife species and especially the cats. The game drives are in 4x4 safari vehicles (not vans) and all drives are with experienced driver guides. This one week safari offers a combination of some of the best wildlife areas in Kenya with private conservancies where you are able to walk and take night drives to see the nocturnal animals.

Amboseli National Park, Lake Nakuru National Park and the Maasai Mara are among the finest wildlife reserves in Africa and offer the chance to see a huge variety of wildlife species. Selenkay Conservancy is located in a vast wilderness area in the heart of Maasai country near Amboseli and is owned by a Maasai community. Here you will be really off the beaten track in an area which has not been visited by tourists until recently and where visitor numbers are restricted to a maximum of 18 so you will not see any other safari vehicles. Ol Kinyei Conservancy won the EcoTourism Kenya award of Conservancy of the Year for 2012 and is 17,500 acres of exclusive wildlife habitat near the Mara Reserve where visitors can see a huge array of animals without other tourist vehicles being present.

Porini Amboseli Camp, Selenkay Conservancy

Porini Amboseli Camp  is in the 15,000 acre Selenkay Conservancy, to the north of Amboseli National Park. This conservancy is reserved exclusively for guests staying in the Porini Amboseli Camp.

The safari camp is small with just 9 tents and is on the lines of the traditional bush camp, but with more comfortable bathroom arrangements than were available to the big game hunters of earlier years!

The camp facilities include 9 spacious guest tents, comfortably furnished with en suite bathrooms including shower, wash basin and flush toilet and solar powered electric lighting. The camp provides an exclusive experience catering to a maximum of 18 guests at a time with all meals, drinks (wine, gin & tonic, beer, sodas, mineral water).

All activities including game drives in the conservancy and in the Amboseli National Park, walks, night drives and sundowners are included in the price and transport on this safari is in a specially designed open-sided Landrover 4 wheel drive safari vehicle. Going on safari in a 'proper' safari vehicle gives a far better safari experience than travelling in the minibus vans with window seats used by other tour operators! And as Selenkay Conservancy is a private game reserve, owned by the local Maasai community, you will not see any other vehicles or minibuses.

Mbweha Camp, Congreve Conservancy

Tucked away in the spectacular vastness of The Great Rift Valley in the 6400 acre private Congreve Conservancy, Mbweha Camp is located at the southern border of Lake Nakuru National Park with beautiful views of the Eburu and Mau Ranges. The Conservancy is home to a multitude of plains game and is an ideal area for guided bush walks.

The numbers of flamingos at Lake Nakuru may fluctuate depending on water levels in the lake and when the waters rise after periods of rain they move away and migrate to other Rift Valley lakes in East Africa such as Elementeita, Bogoria Logipi and Natron. However there are always some flamingos to be seen and the park is also home to a spectacular array of wildlife including black rhino, white rhino, lion, leopard, hippo, water buck, Cape buffalo and the endangered Rothschild giraffe.

Besides flamingos, the park has 450 other species of birds including large numbers of pelicans as well as Fish Eagles. Our game drives in the park go near the lake shore to see the massed concentration of flamingos which are present in the dryer months when lake levels are low, and our driver-guides also take you on the road along the cliffs with spectacular views of the lake below and then to explore the forested area of the park to see the wide range of wildlife in the park with a good chance of spotting lions, leopards and both species of rhino.

Porini Mara Camp, Ol Kinyei Conservancy

Porini Mara Camp is sited inside the exclusive 17,500 acre wildlife conservancy of Ol Kinyei, one of the most beautiful wilderness areas in the Serengeti-Mara eco-system. This is pristine wilderness with open savannah plains, riverine forest, springs, streams and rivers, rolling hills and spectacular views across the Mara. Ol Kinyei belongs to a Maasai community which has set aside the conservancy as a sanctuary for wildlife. The conservancy holds a wide variety of the animal species for which the Mara is famous including a large resident pride of lions as well as leopards and cheetahs.

Ol Kinyei Conservancy is about 10 miles from the Maasai Mara park boundary and 25 minutes from the Siana airstrip used by the daily scheduled flights to Mara from Nairobi.

Porini Mara Camp has 6 guest tents sited in the shade of yellow-barked Acacia trees along the banks of the Laetoli, a permanent spring within Ol Kinyei. The tents are spacious and each has an en-suite bathroom with flush toilet and safari shower. With no more than 12 guests in camp one gets the experience of real safari camping in the bush in an exclusive private wilderness but with all the comforts required by discerning travellers. Food is excellent with home baked bread, fresh salads and high quality meals prepared by the camp Chef.
