WATAMU Hemingways
Hemingways is situated
approximately 90 miles north of Mombasa and 18 miles south
of Malindi on the Turtle Bay beach at Watamu. Hemingways lies
within the Watamu Marine National Park and is only 3 hours
from Tsavo East, Kenya's largest National Park.
Hemingways
is a 78-bed resort-hotel on the stunning sands of Watamu Bay. The ambience of
the hotel is of relaxed sophistication, with the friendliness of a privately-owned
hotel coupled to the facilities and standards of an international resort.
Our international cuisine
is highly regarded, with attentive service to match, and our staff are renowned
for their courtesy and friendliness.
Our
beach was voted by the Sunday Times as being one of the top 10 beaches in the
world, there being just 4 hotels on as many miles of coast, fringed by the finest
of tropical barrier reefs.
Three miles up the coast from Hemingways is Mida, a tidal lagoon of mangrove creeks
teeming with exotic bird-life, and the venue for our sundowner cruises on an Arabic
dhow, whilst out to sea there is dolphin-watching, snorkelling and diving. For
game-lovers we offer a variety of personal safaris with our own experienced guides.
For the more energetic
we have a wide range of excursions and facilities, from shopping trips to our
in-house gym. Add the
best big-game fishing fleet in Africa with some of the most productive fishing
grounds in the world, and you have a truly unique and exceptional destination
for your tropical vacation. Whatever
you are looking for in your fantasy holiday, we look forward to making that dream
come true, and would be delighted to welcome you to our own little bit of paradise.
'Stunning sea views, stylishly
furnished'
All Hemingways rooms and suites
are extremely comfortable, have ocean views, are within yards of the beach and
benefit from 24 hour room service.
All
have bathrooms with showers en-suite. There is air-conditioning and fans throughout,
& rooms also have mosquito nets, personal safes and room fridges.
In the original
wing of the hotel, these friendly rooms are as close to the beach as is possible
without being built on the sand, they are shaded by palm trees and offer a choice
of twin or double beds.
Again, there are double and
twin beds to choose from in the more spacious rooms of the new Hemingways wing.
These rooms are all on the
first and second floors and the exercise taken on the staircases is rewarded by
enhanced panoramas of the beach and sea from the balconies.
These very spacious rooms
are on the ground floor of the new wing, offering the easiest of access to the
hotel gardens and beach, they have a bath as well as a shower, three single beds
and a terrace with table and chairs.
Junior Suites
are available on all three floors. They have super king-sized beds, large baths,
as well as showers and a lounge area.
Food
Wining and dining at Hemingways
'We take our food very
seriously'
Africa,
Eastern and Arabian influences
We offer a wide range of international
styles, ranging from sophisticated recipes with delicate sauces, to simple cooking
of the finest ingredients. We have our own farms at Lake Naivasha, with fresh
vegetables and flowers flown in on a daily basis, whilst our own fishing boats
land fish every afternoon.
Over
the centuries the influences of the trading routes have brought a medley of cooking
styles to Africa. Couple these with the best seafood, mangrove crabs, lobster,
and fish of all types, and our chefs really have the opportunity to excel.
Our 'table d'hote' menus are a mixture of international and local
favourites, with daily vegetarian options. We are always happy to offer second
portions and to cater for the large appetite or for specific dietary needs.
We
have buffets on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday lunch including Mongolian, Italian
and Indian specialities. Live cooking is a major feature including not only main
dishes but also our pasta and salad stations.
In
our Mongolian buffet we offer a wide selection of fresh meats, fish, seafood,
vegetables, herbs, seasonings, spices and sauces which you assemble in a bowl.
Our chefs then stir-fry your chosen ingredients on the large cast iron 'Kadai'
(similar to a flat wok) - the freshest and the best food that Kenya has to offer,
cooked in front of you, just the way you like it. Delicious!
During
the calmer months (December to March) dinner is served on the terrace, with the
sounds of the sea, the light of the moon and the stars, and the rustle of the
trade winds in the palms for company.
And
should you come fishing with us, our chefs will prepare your prize exactly as
you would like it. You might fancy Japanese style sashimi, finely sliced with
soya sauce and wasabi, or maybe blackened Cajun style fillets, or just simply
steamed! Which ever way, you will never eat fish fresher than this.
Half
board is included in your package and we also offer an a la carte menu, with seafood
specialities.
"From
Golf to Snorkelling, there's plenty to keep you occupied"
Big-game
fishing, Scuba Diving, Gymnasium, Tennis, Golf...
We
offer a wide variety of sporting activities:
Hemingways is one of the world's
premier big-game fishing destinations. We cater for all levels of experience,
from novices to experts.
The Indian Ocean at Watamu
offers fabulous diving opportunities, along with a highly reputable and experienced
dive-school called 'Aquaventures' right on the doorstep of Hemingways.
In conjunction with AQUA VENTURES, we offer a full range of PADI and BSAC courses.
Also available are special diving safaris to new and exciting sites along the
Kenyan coast. These can include the 'magical' Vuma caves near Kilifi,
where the 'giant' Rock Cod lies in wait! To maintain a sense of privacy
and adventure, these excursions are available to smaller groups only. For the
more adventurous there is the added attraction of night and wreck diving!
We
have our own fully equipped gym on site.
Horse riding can be arranged
in Malindi, whilst camel rides can be taken on the Hemingways beach!
It is possible to play golf
at the Malindi Golf and Country Club. Green fees are payable at the going rate.
Bicycles are available for
hire on a hourly basis, allowing you to sight-see Watamu Village, the Snake Farm,
Mida Creek and many other places.
