Setting the scene
Just opened to tourists, this intimate camp is based on a traditional safari camp but is much more comfortable, with enormous tents (and flush toilets).
First impressions
But where are the tents? Built on eco-tourism principles, the camp has such a minimal impact on its surroundings that the tents appear to fade into the landscape.
Why it's special
Set in land leased from the Masai community, which benefits from the income generated; some Masai, wearing traditional red robes, work in the grounds.
Hitting the sack
Each tent contains a comfortable single and double bed and has a separate bathroom. A washbasin is filled with hot water each morning before breakfast and the bucket shower is filled daily after game drives.
Sampling the fare
Mango for breakfast, and fillet steak and fresh vegetables eaten al fresco by candlelight in the evenings.
Added attractions
Night drives, walks along a lugga (riverbed) during the dry season, and visits to a local Masai homestead. The abundant game at Amboseli National Park is less than an hour's drive away.
Sex appeal
No telephones, so no interruptions.
Star quality
None of the terrestrial variety yet, but look to the night sky . . .
What we think
In Swahili porini means "in the wilds" and this camp, which sleeps eight, certainly lives up to it.
Bottom line
Sold as a package including transfers from Nairobi, full-board at Porini Camp and game drives. Three-night safaris cost £299; flights from the UK start at £349.
Need to know
Bookable through Tropical Places (0800-018 5256).
