Fumba Beach LodgeClick to enlarge

Fumba Beach Lodge is a peaceful hideaway located on one of Zanzibar’s most secluded and unspoiled beaches. The Fumba Beach peninsula – a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - is set on forty acres of the Menai Beach conservation area and is a large marine haven and an eco-project. The essence of Fumba is privacy, relaxation, serenity, excellence and attention to detail.

Fumba Beach Lodge offers well-designed elegance, with friendly first class service. Just 30 minutes from the capital, Stone Town, the lodge is away from busy tourist areas, a perfect venue for enjoying tranquillity and the space to dream, swim, dive, walk amongst tropical gardens or have that special romantic occasion in one of the many secluded spots.

Set in this exquisite wilderness of tropical forests and secluded beaches there are twenty six spacious ensuite rooms; twenty are deluxe ‘bandas’ with ensuite bathroom, terrace, stunning ocean view, suitable for families or couples. Four are Luxury Suites, and there are two Baobab Suites. All of the rooms have king size double beds, mosquito nets, fans and top-quality imported bed linen and quilts.

Deluxe rooms are spacious and light and have an ensuite bathroom, fans, an ocean view and king size beds.

There are four Luxury Suites each with a bath, a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired outside shower overlooking the ocean, direct access to the beach, private roof terrace and king size beds.

The two Baobab Suites offer the ultimate extravagance. Cradled around a 300-year-old baobab tree, they have direct access to the beach and complete open-air bathrooms.

The chefs at Fumba Beach Lodge use the best ingredients, all fresh herbs and vegetables come straight from the lodge vegetable garden. The Fumba Peninsula has some of the most fertile soil on Zanzibar, giving the most amazing, sweet, ripe tropical fruits.

Fresh seafood is provided daily straight from the warm waters of the Indian Ocean by neighbouring fishermen. Catches include the most succulent tuna, snapper, barracuda, lobster, prawn and crab.

The Baobab Spa

The Spa and massage therapy centre has been built around a majestic African Baobab tree with a six metre platform and it offers a wide range of beauty treatments and massages including Swedish, therapeutic, aromatherapy and Zanzibari scrubs. Treatments are by trained therapists and make use of natural ingredients and the exotic spices and flowers of the island such as frangipani, cinnamon, vanilla, cloves and sea salt.

The Jacuzzi is built into the tree itself, shaded by rustling leaves and overlooking the lush landscape. It is ideal for a private soak or a romantic shared bath with champagne under the night skies.

Watersports and Activities

Guests at Fumba Beach Lodge can be as relaxed or active as they like – there are plenty of activities and excursions available.

Kayaks and Windsurfers are available for rental, and there are organised opportunities to get out on the water with snorkelling and fishing trips (with professional deep sea fishing equipment). In August and September there are whales in the Menai Bay area so guests enjoy special whale watching outings.

The Lodge has restored its own traditional dhow - "Sherazade" – which now offers glorious cruising opportunities in this stunning location. Picnics and day trips are arranged to some of the many stunning archipelago islands. The trips include an exploration of the Menai Bay area, home to the Bottlenose and Indo-pacific humpback dolphin (dolphin sightings on 75% of the trips). On Komonda Island guests can take a tour of the mangrove forest, and on Pungume Island they can experience a 360 degree view of the turquoise blue Indian Ocean from the sandbank.

A host of Diving Packages are available – and there is a range of interesting dive sites, many approx 25 minutes by boat from the lodge. Everyone from absolute beginners to advanced divers is catered for with all levels of PADI courses up to professional status. The diving team includes a qualified and insured PADI Master Scuba Diver Instructor and Divemaster.

Day trips are also arranged to historic Stone Town where you can wander amongst the souk-like alleys to see a fusion of Omani, Persian, African and European cultures. This tour visits the town market, the old slave market, the National Museum, High Court, Slave Chambers, House of Wonders, Old Fort, Sultan’s Palace, Livingstone’s House and the Former English Gentleman’s Club.

There are also trips to see the diverse variety of wildlife in and around Jozani Forest (including large troops of the rare endemic red colubus monkey, one of the most endangered monkey species in the world) and a Spice Tour where guests can learn about spices and of how these have played such a key role in the history of the island.
