Uganda is a country of varied landscapes, with open savannah, thick rainforest and spectacular mountain scenery. The country offers immense biodiversity with its National Reserves and protected areas home to a unique range of wildlife including over 1000 bird species and varied flora and fauna.

Uganda is most famous for its rare mountain gorillas and the opportunity for tracking these wonderful creatures.

Mountain gorillas are a critically endangered species with less than 800 individuals remaining. Over half of these are found in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda, the rest in the Virunga Volcanoes shared between Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo.

Mountain gorillas are not known to survive in captivity so they can only be seen in their natural forest habitat. Our gorilla safaris in Uganda bring the opportunity to experience a trip of a lifetime to view these magnificent animals in this natural setting.

Mountain Gorilla Groups in Uganda

In Uganda, there are seven currently habituated mountain gorilla groups, with six of these available for tourist visits. (The seventh gorilla family is habituated for purposes of research for development of mountain gorilla welfare).

Gorilla tourism in Uganda generates income that is channelled back into gorilla conservation and also benefits the local communities – helping to prevent human-wildlife conflict.
