Katavi consists of a series of secret floodplains that open up in front of you as you arrive through their woodland fringes. Katavi National Park, one of Tanzania's most westerly and remote parks, is only just beginning to gain recognition for its beauty and the quality of its game viewing. It is remote in the extreme and with just a few hundred visitors a year is the ultimate in off the beaten track safari destinations. If you have the time and resources, it is the definitive safari destination. Lake Katavi and Lake Chada boast one of the largest populations of Hippopotami and crocodiles, and the floodplains provide a habitat for an abundance of waterfowl. Its vast size, infinite grassland plains, isolation and inaccessibility have meant that herd sizes are huge and it is not unknown to see up to 1600 buffalo at once! Lion, and other predators, wait along the fringed woodland to ambush the game as it returns to the woodland for shelter at sundown. There's nowhere else like it!
Katavi wildlife camp is located in the best game area so that you can watch the daily movements of game between food and water and witness the drama unfold before you. Our tents, luxurious in size and furnishings, are cunningly set back in amongst the trees that line the floodplain, providing both shade and camouflage in the prime game viewing area of the park, where the wildlife are unaware of your presence.
The camp is very exclusive, with only six tents, luxurious in size and furnishings and cunningly set back amongst the trees that line the floodplain, providing both shade and camouflage in the prime game viewing area of the park, where the wildlife are unaware of your presence. Each tent has en suite bathroom and solar lighting.
The camp is small and select with personalised hosting and guiding by an experienced guide. The camp is open from June until the end of November to coincide with the dry season.
Tom Appleby, an experienced zoologist and professional guide, will host your visit and lead game drives and walks. Specially adapted 4WD vehicles are used on game drives, with two-way radio and tiered seating for visibility.
